Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A Shellharbour homeowner encountered a serious and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, positioned at a higher altitude, began to cascade into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome intrusion led to flooring damage, promoted rising damp, and resulted in mould growth inside the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

What Methods Can You Use to Locate the Source of Water Ingress?
The issue arose from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of neighbouring properties. Without a comprehensive drainage system in place to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.
Implementing an Effective Drainage Solution
CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically engineered to capture and redirect water before it could jeopardise the home’s foundation.
The project comprised several crucial elements:
- A French drain system meticulously crafted to gather surface and subsurface water from adjacent properties, directing it via gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes in the curb to facilitate efficient water discharge.
- Replacement of the original smaller pipes with three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes, linked to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, utilising concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled with an excavator to create a robust barrier against the neighbouring yard.
- Efficient removal of soil on-site, aided by a dumper for streamlined site management.
Which Strategies Can You Implement for Efficient Water Management?
The newly established drainage system now adeptly captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, effectively diverting it away from the home. This solution provides the homeowner with a durable, low-maintenance approach that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
